The Christena Disaster: A Turning Point
1
The Tragedy
When the MV Christena ferry sank between St. Kitts and Nevis back in 1970, it claimed over 200 local lives and left an indelible mark on the island's collective memory.
2
Cultural Impact
The disaster created a generational fear of deep water among many Nevisians, leading to widespread reluctance to learn swimming skills.
3
Present Day
Decades later, this apprehension continues to affect how younger generations interact with the ocean that surrounds their island home.
Breaking the Cycle of Fear
Water Familiarity
Introducing children to water in safe, controlled environments to build comfort and reduce anxiety.
Safety Education
Teaching water safety principles and basic swimming techniques adapted to local conditions.
Skill Building
Progressive swimming lessons that develop ability and confidence in gradually deeper water.
Ocean Appreciation
Fostering a positive relationship with the sea through education about marine ecosystems.

Our Mission: Safety, Confidence, and Ocean Appreciation

Ocean Stewardship
Cultivating a generation that appreciates and protects marine environments
Water Confidence
Building self-assurance through progressive skill development
Water Safety
Ensuring every child knows fundamental surviv/al techniques
We believe swimming is not just a recreational skill but an essential life-saving ability for island children, helping transform fear into respect and appreciation for the ocean.
In addition to swimming, some of these folks are advancing to the point of learning how to become lifeguards and keep swimming safe for others on the island.
Join Us: Support Nevis' Swimming Future
Without a public pool on Nevis, our swimmers train in the open sea.
Yet against all odds, one of our swimmers, Donnisa Wilkins, who was only 9 years old, won the Overall Best Swimmer at last year's Inter Island Competition
Her victory proves what determination can achieve, even without proper facilities.
Help us build Nevis' first community pool to nurture more champions like Tanisha.
